Horizontal & Vertical Text Tools
The Horizontal Text Tool will be your most used text tool. Select the tool. Vertical will also be used on occasion. Check out your options bar. Lots of goodies here.

Click somewhere on the document and you can type the text you want. You may have to alter the size or font of the text.
You will notice a new layer with a “T” in its thumbnail, this is a text layer, by double clicking on the “T” you can alter the text.

By changing the Opacity you can make the text more or less visible.
The box with “Normal” in it effects how the layer works with other layers, it will be looked at more completely in other tutorials.
Right-Click on your Text layer and select “Blending Options…” this will bring up a new window were the magic of Photoshop really comes into play.

Through this window we will create a “Bevel and Emboss” effect on our text. The others will be gone through in another tutorial.
Click on “Bevel and Emboss” this should highlight the words and check the box beside it.

You should notice the middle of the window change, you can modify the different numbers and setting to create many different effects, for this I used the style “Emboss” as it creates effects both inside and outside the text. I also had to use a larger size and changed the Direction to “Down.”
Horizontal and Vertical Type Mask Tools
These tools are basically the type tools, but instead of creating a new layer and text it creates a selection in the shape of the text

Click somewhere on the document and you can type the text you want. You may have to alter the size or font of the text.
You will notice your document go a pink color, this is a mask, as you type what you want you will find the text will appear white, this is what will be selected when you click another tool.

You should have a selection like this.
Say you had a image of a jaguar skin, you could use this too to take a selection of the skin and cut it out. You could then apply the same Bevel and Emboss as our last example.

To make the effect even more stunning you could copy the text selection and paste it back into the image then apply the bevel effect to create an indented text inside the image. It can create a neat effect. However the jaguar skin as not the best example… Here is the same technique done again but on clouds above a skyscraper. Remember, some effects are not as good on certain images.
