The other day I received a letter from a fellow photographer who was selling much of his equipment Now there is nothing new with that, people are always selling their equipment. Some of the reasons include wanting to buy something new, getting rid of excess, retiring, or going digital. But this was different – he needed cash! Business was the pits and he was getting buried under. This might be understandable if he was new in the business, or not very creative, or had never taken a business course, or never mixed with other photographers. This guy had a Masters of Photography in both Canada and the United States. We'll call him Pete. He had lectured internationally, and had been in the business for over 25 years. I use the term had, because in two short years he lost his business, his equipment, his great reputation, his standing in the community, and ultimately lost his wife. All due to poor choices! Had I only received his letter earlier and known his circumstances, I would have been able to do something for him. But this is the very reason that my family (my mother and father were photographers) and friends pleaded with me to come out of early retirement. Everyday we hear of stories just like this one, where another photographer loses all hopes and dreams and in many cases more. I can help them!!! I can be your personal assistant too, if you let me. Do you know how much it breaks my heart when I read the statistics surrounding photographers, particularly when, as a group they are in the second highest position when it comes to going broke in North America? Do you know how frustrated I am when I hear of so many talented photographers who are barely scraping by? They just don't have the integrated tools they need to succeed. You wouldn't believe how passionate I feel about your success and getting you these tools so that you will succeed, so you will be able to achieve your goals and you will be able to live your life with all that it has to offer. Every day statistics like these comes across my desk... Did you know that the US Census Bureau considers anyone with a family unit of four making less than $19,000 as living in POVERTY? “Half of all photographers made between $17,740 and $34,910 in 2002!?!? Where did you fit in? You do the math. 50/50 chance that you or most of the other photographers are just above the official poverty line! The working poor. Life doesn't have to be this way. One of Pete's biggest problems, that many of us share, is believing that we need to do it all on our own. As independent, creative business people, we need to have our stamp on everything that we do. If we don't, we are less of a person, or less of an artist – poppycock. Another misconception is that it would cost too much to have personal coaching, when in actual fact it makes you money. It is impossible to know it all. Anyone who tells you that they do is full of it and I don't mean popcorn. We are not born business geniuses. We may be great artists, or communicators, or persuaders; but not great business people – are you ready to learn what it takes and how to become one? Let's begin right here right now, putting you in the driver seat to your success You need to know what it is you want! Part of a successful strategy is creating for yourself a definition of success, a definition that encompasses what you stand for and believe in, and at the same time, what maintains your integrity. What is it that most people want in life? Why, most people want to be happy, of course. We do things to bring others happiness, and of course, ourselves happiness. Now would be a good time to start thinking about what happiness means to you. What is it going to take for you to be happy? In a journal write down the answers to the following questions: 1. When is enough, enough? How much money do you want to make a year? 2. How much money do you want to have in your bank account one year from today? 3. How much money do you want in your bank account five years from now? 4. What do you want your ideal weight to be? (Yes this is important because if you feel great, you will act great, and subsequently you will achieve greatly.) 5. How many hours a week do you want to work? 6. How many weeks of holidays will you take this year? 7. What do you need to do, to recharge your batteries, mentally, spiritually, and physically? 8. What extra knowledge do you need to learn to bring you closer to successright now? 9. After determining these values, create your own definition of success. 10. Are you really, really committed to your success? If you are then read on and get the help to make it happen.
